Left college as I was offered my student nursing position from my work experience position.
I have a varied experience in small animal practice. My first practice, where I worked as a kennel assistant, was a large hospital for a group of surgeries, so I gained basic nursing skills, assisted with kennel nursing and ran bloods.
I then gained my training place at Kynoch Vets which is a group of six surgeries where student nurses move around to the different branches on rotation each month. This was very valuable as the Crowthore and Easthampstead branches are orthopedic referral centres, the Yateley branch takes referral for cardiology and the Wokingham branch deals with exotics. As such, throughout my training I was able to work with a range of different cases.
I worked at the Crowthorne branch for four months during my training due to being overstaffed at the Harmans Water branch. This was a great experience as I got to see more interesting cases coming through and get a taste of referral nursing. There was an onsite lab at Crowthorne too, where I became confident with using and maintaining laboratory equipment.
Since qualifying I took on the role of supporting the head nurse and assisting the head vet with admin tasks. I have worked closely with two new graduate vets and enjoy helping them in those stressful early days of their careers.
While working at Kynoch vets I was head of work experience which I really enjoyed as I love working with people and got to teach young people about the profession.
I also have experience with out of hours and emergency nursing, as Kynoch covered their own out of hours at evenings and weekends until 10pm. I have experienced a wide range of emergency situations and really enjoyed how much this has taught me about working independently and having to use my initiative as you are often working alone or with only one vet.
After being qualified for two years with Kynoch I decided I wanted to try out referral nursing and was lucky enough to be offered a position at fitzpatrick referrals oncology and soft tissue in Guilford. I Really enjoy it here and has been eye opening to see how referral works . It has really helped my confidence with using complex apparatus such as chest drains, wound catheters, active wound drains, central lines and arterial lines. However the commute to Guildford and amount of late evening shifts have proved to be too much of a strain on my work life balance.
I am now hoping to try out locuming to get a bigger experience of different practices and meet lots of new people.
