Veterinary Jobs; Locum & Permanent Positions across the UK Carlton Professional Recruitment: The Veterinary Specialists!
Carlton Professional Recruitment was established in 1998 by a practicing veterinary surgeon who saw an opportunity to develop the sort of locum agency he wanted to utilise. The company was developed by bringing on board an experienced team of recruitment professionals, drawing on both of these areas of expertise to focus on specialist recruitment to the veterinary profession. The company has grown from strength to strength and covers all areas of both veterinary practice and associated industry. We provide permanent and locum job opportunities for vets and veterinary nurses, and offer a customised recruitment service for practices looking to expand their teams.
We have dedicated individuals within the Carlton team who work in specific areas, whether that’s representing candidates looking for their next permanent job, or coordinating locums with ever-changing availability! We work closely with our clients to get a good understanding of their needs and match the skills and experience of our candidates to get the right person for their job.
We receive new vet and vet nurse applications on a daily basis – we therefore benefit from a resource of candidates that is constantly renewing itself, while maintaining a strong core of long-established, skilled and reliable locums. We like to think of you as one of OUR TEAM and so will keep you regularly updated with veterinary job vacancies and progress reports. We are here to answer any queries you may have and to help you through the challenges of locum life if you need it. So, contact our team today. We have jobs available in veterinary practices nationwide across the UK as vets, vet nurses, practice managers, or reception staff. We also place into veterinary industry positions. So whether veterinary practice work, veterinary sales, technical advice, pharmaceutical representative or research is your preference, we can find the job for you.
Who We Are
I initially started Carlton Professional Recruitment Ltd in 1998 after seeing an opportunity to run a veterinary recruitment agency that would offer both the personal and friendly service I required along with the professional approach needed to ensure a reliable and effective recruitment service. I continue to work part-time as a practicing veterinarian allowing me to stay in touch and “in-contact” with the veterinary profession first hand. We are truly a veterinary company run by a vet for the veterinary profession; understanding the needs and requirements of veterinary practice along with the excitement and joy derived from a career in the veterinary profession.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. The reason for this is to keep our agency fees substantially lower than if we did. This means we charge the veterinary recruiting business a fixed day fee for supplying a veterinary locum. The veterinary locum will be paid directly by your business as a contractor, independent to our agency fee. This keeps all charges and fees very transparent.
Locums are paid a week after they have worked a period. However the veterinary practice will likely pay the agency invoice at 4 weeks. If the agency places 20 vets per week, that’s around £25,000 in salaries per week (£100,000 per month). To cover this shortfall the invoices are often factored and credit is attained. This cost would have to inevitably be passed onto the client practice in the form of higher fees. In addition to this, there is also a consideration of potential 12% employers national insurance contributions to add to this. Because of this we opt not to run as a payroll agency and that keeps our fees to you down by 50% compared to a payroll agency.
This will depend on how you engage the locum. Locum vets are independent contractors and generally will work on either a self employed or limited company basis or will engage the services of an umbrella finance organisation to invoice on their behalf. In engaging SE or Ltd Co contractors, as long as you ensure they are aware of and compliant to the IR35 legislation then they are responsible for paying their own national insurance contributions. However if you engage a locum and process their P45 through your PAYE system then they are deemed as “employed” by the practice and yes, the business is liable to contribute to employers national insurance for them. It is more common for locum vet nurses to be engaged by the practice on a PAYE basis due to difficulties in achieving IR35 compliance however each case should be assessed independently. This needs to be borne in mind when negotiating the rate of pay for employed verses contractor individuals, as contractors will be paying their own NI contributions and so will be factoring this into their rates.
